I was wiping the inside of my microwave when a piece of silver coloured card fell out (4x4ins). There is now a square hole in the side and I can see some kind of silver "instrument" in it. The piece of card cannot be put back because the bits of card that were holding the larger card have fallen off. Hope this makes sense. My question is,can I still use my microwave or do I need a new one. This one is only about 2 years old.

I was afaid of that. Looks like I will have to get a new one.Don't use it much but would hate to be without.
I wouldnt use it giveup, not worth the risk. You can get really cheap new microwaves these days.
Indeed, we have one and it sits in the corner then when we need it , it is a godsend.
You don't need a new microwave, you need a new bit to replace the part that's fallen out. I had this happen a while back. I can't remember what it's called but it'll tell you in the user manual.

Did you do it yourself boxtops,or call someone in.
Yes, OH screwed the new part back in.

My husband's away at the moment,but this is a piece of silver card and it had four little flaps on it which just fitted into 4 slots,not really very safe I would have thought. I think I will get a new one.
Jj gave me an excellent tip on here a couple of years ago about microwaves. Put your mobile phone inside, shut the door and then call it. If it rings then the microwave is not sealed and therefore not safe. Dunno if it's relevant to your question, but it's still a good tip :-)

Thanks for all your answers. Have ordered a new one. Safest all round.
It's called Mylar and it's easy to get from any of on-line electrical spares suppliers like espares. It does often get broken when cleaning as it is quite brittle and isn't expensive, here's one example;
