Are You Qualified?

If the English Baccalaureate had gone ahead, job application forms would soon have been asking "Have you obtained the English Baccalaureate or equivalent?".

To lawfully answer 'Yes', you'd need to have O-levels (at any grade), CSE (at Grade 1 only) or GCSEs (at grades A to C only) in ALL of the following 5 subjects areas:
Maths
English
A 'pure' Science subject (such as Physics, Chemistry or Biology)
A modern language
Either History or Geography.

So how many of you could lawfully answer 'Yes'. I couldn't!

Not sure whether its my age or the profession I'm in but I've never actually filled out a job application in my life (I'm 50).

no. But I do have a City & Guilds in COBOL and a fork lift license.

I left school at 15 without any qualifications. I started off as a junior receptionist and taught myself to type and do speed writing as I was inspired by the typing pool there. I worked my way up to audio typist. Went to college to do bookeeeping which I then progressed to in my career until 1980 when my son was born. I then did a lot of cleaning jobs (good ones though) and realised I could do more, so back to college again and got to level 3 in Catering and Hospitality which Ive done ever since one way or another, being a cook in a care home for 3 years. Ive only ever been out of work for about 3 months in all my working life of 46 years (so far)

I did Latin too - but it'd have been much more useful to me if they'd taught me how to weld!

Why don't they offer car mechanics? - it would be so useful to so many people!

Car mechanics? When we were shown round Roedean, the Head was at pains to show us that the girls could not only learn car mechanics but that some of them had built a car from scratch. Same old story; private education provides where state education fails! LOL

I've just been reading through all of the posts here since I went to bed in the early hours. Thanks to everyone for contributing; I'm glad that I'm not the only 'failure' around ;-)
