Parish councillor are elected under the same procedures which apply to all other council elections (i.e. district and county). A date for an election will be announced with nominations for candidature invited.
Assuming that there are a sufficient number of nominations for a ballot to be held, a ballot will take place using the same format that is used for other elections. The 'first past the post' method of election still applies to all such elections.
In some areas, parish council elections are fiercely contested but in many others there are frequently too few candidates for a ballot to be required. In such cases, the parish council is empowered to co-opt additional members to fill the vacancies.
