All I have to say one the subject as there has been so much said already is that Fizzy I don't believe that it is up to a teacher to love the students rather than teach them how to spell...unless of course it is written into the contract these days! The kids have their families and friends to love them, the job of the teacher is surely to teach and if you can't spell what hope do the kids have?!!
Just a note for everybody out there angry about this whole thread; there are givers and takers in the world and nothing anybody can do to change the attitude of others!

Dear fizzydrinks2...helps a little bit in my job if people can spell...if you work in a hospital and you can't spell then people can end up with the wrong treatment, and serious side effects. (We're not going to debate doctor's scripts here!).

If you are going to fake an ailment, a bad back's easy enough to fake, but I do hope you get found out. Like the previous respondents said, it's not like you don't get enough holidays, and you get paid more than I do for doing a graduate job, without the responsibility of making decisions in an acute care environment.

Before you ask, I have had three days off sick in eleven years

Hey fizzy - you're a teacher - cant you have stress ? Much more believable in your proffession than a bad back and just as easy to fake.
Of course i do not condone your behaviour but as an ex teacher myself............!?!
I think it's wrong to say that a teacher only works 9 til 3.30 and gets lots of holiday! Most of the teachers I know work til about 6, then bring home all of their marking etc to do, so they end up working until quite late. Teachers work hard, dont make out like they're a bunch of wasters. I can see why you would want a week off, especially as technically you aren't having a holiday because of your second job!
I reckon you shouldn't try to feign an illness to get time off; I reckon the best idea is to ask for a week of unpaid leave as somebody has already suggested, this way they can get cover (as they would've had to do anyway if you'd skived) but you wont have to worry about coming back really tanned. You should just explain your situation to your boss.
Good luck!!
Talk about jobs worth.....ark at you all more fall you if none of you have pulled a sicky your the sad ones. You only live once for god sake whats a week any way take no notice of half of these plebs there only jealous i expect. go and have a great time come back with a tan, so what they can only sack you and i'm sure theres many more jobs around and may be your be better off have a lovely time and leave these saddows on here working hard
Actually I'm off on holiday tomorrow morning, so there. It's just that mine is out of my leave.

And I don't end up with HTML in my tags like some sort of 'kwit.
Go and enjoy your holiday fizzy! i cant believe some of the posts youve had back! jelousy comes to mind (LOL) cant you " borrow "a tanning lamp to build up a bit of colour whilst still at work? ......... you may get "stress" anyway after reading your posts :) btw- when are you going?
WaldoMcroog hope you have a lovely time jobs worth
while you're away Waldo I trust you'll still be paying the wages of fizzy and her replacement, same as me.

I dont agree with wasting the doc's time but i dont understand why alot of people are getting so annoyed about somebody wanting to pull a sicky, i thought most people did it every now & then? there are a couple of people where i work that are really quite lazy yet i have to work my ass off all day, when i have time off it pleases me to know that they are having to cover me and actually do some work for a change. Although that said, each time i have pulled a sicky i seem to end up being ill a few days later, suppose thats what you get for lying!!

anyway, fizzydrinks if you do manage to get to florida hope you have a good time

Are you serious? I don't have kids, but if I did I would hope they weren't being (supposedly) educated by someone with such unprofessional standards, who goes on a public message board and asks this question!

Get a grip - ask for special dispensation to take the time off, if not, offer the holiday to a friend or relative?

BTW - my other half is a physio. She gets her fair share of fake-back-painers swinging the lead in her clinic every week. She sees through it before the person has even sat down, and any competent doctor would too. From what you've implied, your family depends on this income from your second job whilst you are not teaching - I'd suggest if you need it, you don't balls it up by taking a free jolly in the sun to the detriment of your employer and colleagues! Alternatively, if the job doesn't mean that much to you and you absolutely have to take this holiday, then leave and get another job with someone who will give you unpaid leave.

I'm self employed and get no paid holiday at all - people like you make me laugh, trying to have your cake and eat it! I suppose you'll be expecting this time off to be paid....jesus wept!

I am really pleased about the replies, because its good to see that the many still have good morals and are not condoning a whole week off sick, You may well laugh you fizzy thing but if you ask for peoples opinions you are going to get just that their opinions. Its very easy to start name calling but it will not change the fact that one you are lying, two you are wasting a Gp,s precious time and three you are letting your colleagues down. A lies a lie no matter how one tries to validate it

I was not judging you about taking time off work. It was how you proposed to do it. As someone mentioned. How would you explain the tan. I had a similar situation once although I didn't win the holiday, but had the chance to go to New York. I had taken all my holidays and the company I worked for didn't like people having more time off than was necessary. I thought honesty was best and explained the situation and was given the time off and I enjoyed it knowing I could come back and tell everyone about it.

I Hope you get to go to American and I am sure it's probably a once in a lifetime trip. You should perhaps be open with your boss then you can enjoy it and share it all when you return. It would be very difficult not to talk about it as it is a great place.

Sorry if you thought I was judging you. Have a great holiday.

You could always say that the doctor recommended a sunbed for the bad back. Good luck, enjoy your holiday, who cares if you manage to buck the system.

Let he who is without..... etc

"stress and pressure of the job"

then your boss feels bad too....

then you can say you got away for a couple of days to relax.........

maybe you could try for 2 weeks with that excuse?

Didn't you post this question late last year? I know you had a few suggestions then... and people questioning how you could pull off a tan after a week off sick - particularly this time of year :-)
