You could try rubbing some ordinary washing-up liquid on it and then wash as normal. Don't know if it will work on prewashed stains. Definately great if you splash your clothes with food or grease whilst cooking, rub the liquid in till it gets frothy then can leave it till ready to do next load of washing, will still come out.

thankyou for that but forgot to mention I have tried that as well.
r u sure it was mud cos mud should just wash out in machine may be it oil
some clay containing muds (they tend to be yellowish or reddish) do have a pigment in them which can stain. The only thing that might work is the careful application of one of the oxygen bleach type products

Thankyou all for your input. I should have mentioned I live in Somerset where the earth is red not brown or black like some other places like London ect.also clay in some areas.
thought that might be it. Oxygen bleach might work, but apply with care!!
