Nothing too challenging in today's EV. Rather disappointing for me.

A gripe gathering momentum for me is that I am all too often having to refer to my earlier Chambers to confirm meanings of proper first names. Probably short sighted of Chambers to omit them in the latest edition but should setters still be using such clues when recommending 2011 edition? Grrr... (Grumpy old woman)

Hello Twit-Who,
I agree it wasn't too challenging, but enjoyable nevertheless. The theme words stood out like a sore thumb, and I seem to remember a similar "connection" theme in a previous EV.
Question Author
.... and shouldn't 37a be a 'C' connection not 'B'?
Good morning all.
I liked this one - not too difficult admittedly.

I feel for the setters; I don't suppose they had any control over the removal of the very useful appendix in the previous editions, and it is such a useful device. it doesn't bother me, and I can do grumpy with the best of them.

The 37a connection seems fine to me.

I can't find 37a as a 'B' connection in Chambers, Slaney, only a 'C'???
Ahh - I just Googled.
Good afternoon all, can't believe the difference between this week's and last. Two ends of the spectrum I think but enjoyable none the less. I agree on the 37a T-W, I think it should be C too but then I never do very well with googling. I'm also in your GOW corner re the leaving out of the name section in this ed of the BRB. Also, does that red edged section in the middle annoy only me? Whatever 'M' word I am checking, I always pick the wrong side of it.....Grump, grump, grump.....
Question Author
Middle section annoys me too... what's the point of it being there? Actually, although I'm irritated I hope I'm not too much of a GOW usually.
As you say, not high on the difficulty scale. My only hiccup is over the wordplay of 14ac which still eludes me. As for the middle of the new Chambers.... my copy is still pristine as I continue to lug around the old one (now in several pieces!) so that is a problem still to come!
Jogler, the "1" refers to 1 across, so the wordplay is a word meaning "brilliant (1 ac)", minus SET.

This was definitely on the easy side; just as well, football starts soon. The Super Bowl is on my wife's birthday this year - fortunately she's a good sport.
Ah, of course. I, too, will be dipping into the football, though only the first game. I am particularly keen on the Red Zone, blissfully ad free, but they may not be able to do that when there is only one game running!
As a long time 49's fan from my days in San Francisco I'll be tuning in at 8pm
with fingers crossed.

As others have said this week's EV was on the easy side but I still found it fun.
Good evening. Haven't been around much lately as busy completing a couple of charity quizzes, but, like others, romped through this one ... except for 7d, for which I am still missing the second letter, so wondering if I have slipped up somewhere.
Must say, I enjoyed it overall.
Question Author
Christiana, 7d is the answer that I allude to in my original gripe. It's not in Chambers 12th edition but is in previous editions.
Christiana, 7 down, for King think Graceland.
I must type far too slowly; you weren't there when I started Twit-Who.
Thanks Twit-who and Slaney - did wonder if it was that king, but couldn't get any back up for it.
