Have you contacted the bank? A few months ago I asked for some money to be transferred from my account to someone elses and a few weeks later it turned out that they had transferred the amount from someone elses account. No-one was any the wiser until this poor girl found out she was overdrawn by a lot more than she expected! It may be that Mr Garland never intended to give you the money. Or you could put a large banner over the A66 saying Thanks for the dosh Pete, I spent it on gin, and then spend it on gin.

The bank wont give out his address or contact details, which is fair enough. I have written to him care of the bank.
Hello my name is Peter Garland - can i have my money back please - is it a lot?
If its more than a 100 i'll come and collect it myself.

Seriously it seems you have done all you can and it is up to the bank to rectify the situation.
I'd be careful about spending it though. Despite all your efforts to trace Mr Garland, if you spend the money, knowing it doesn't actually belong to you, you can be prosecuted for theft. Obviously this will only happen if Mr garland discovers the mistake and asks for it back. My advice would be to take the money out of your account and place it in a high interest savings account. You are entitled to any interest it acrues while waiting for it's rightful owner to claim it back.
