1. MP3 players don't seem to come with any instructions - having a mare! Do I have to buy softwear (Ripping or something) to download from the CD player directly to the MP3?

with your mp3 player you will have had a software cd. This will have contained a media player or will have recommended a media player. for example- itunes, winamp, realplayer etc.

if you did not get a cd or software with the mp3 player- go onto their website and will tell you what to do or let you download a driver.

If you have installed some software- all you have to do is insert a cd into your computer and windows will ask you with which mediaplayer you want to use with the cd (mine asks if i want to open the cd with windows or itunes)- chose the mediaplayer associated with your mp3 player and it will import the songs to your computers hard drive. The connect up your mp3 player and it will upload the songs you have added to you mediaplayer.

I assume you're talking about something other than an ipod & are running Windows not MAC?

You don't need software to transfer MP3s to your player - if necessary you can do this in File Explorer. What you need software for is to "rip" from your CD to your PC (ie. get it to read the tracks off and save them as MP3s on your PC). Windows Media Player, which will be on your PC already, will do this for you. Load the CD in your drive, run Windows Media Player if it hasn't started already, change the options to make sure they go to MP3 (tools, options, (tab rip music, format) MP3) and choose rip (it may take a while). Plug your player in through the USB port and WMP will give you an option after selecting device to move it across (like you're in file file explorer, drag & drop). Personally, as an ipod user with a hubbie who has an MP3 player, I'm astounded at how difficult not having Itunes makes life!
