what advantage does a car that has twin exhausts (jag ect) have over a single exhaust?

Twice as many pipes to rust out for a start, its all just for show anyway as a single system can be made just as efficient as a twin system.
for a production road car not much really. Could even be cheaper and easier to lay out for a V engine (one set from each bank).
Looks cool though from the rear since it separates the men from the boys.
Usually they are fitted to large vee engines, one each side, two pipes can be smaller and easier to fit than one large pipe. If you really wanted to tune the exhaust for maximum power then one pipe for each cylinder could be fitted.
