Where is the engine number on a P reg Vauxhall Astra 1.6?

To cut a long story short I need to replace my engine and my mate has asked me for the engine number. I can't find the logbook.

should be under the bonnet or on the engine mount, along with the VIN Number. If not, you will have to apply for a duplicate V5 Logbook from the boys and girls at the DVLA.

If you look at the engines right hand side front just below the cylinder head, it should be stamped there, it will be covered in rust but if you rub gently with emery it should come up.
