my daughter recently hired a carpet cleaner from B & Q. It was fabulous, cheap and VERY effective. We did her whole 4 bedroomed house in a day.

Check the clean and dirty water tank capacity. If it is too small, you'll be stopping to empty and refill all the time.(mine is about 4l each which is sufficient, wouldnt want less)

Does it have moving brushes on the bottom? If not, then the ability to get in and dislodge the dirt is minimal, and you wont get as good a clean.

If it says water only, is it using steam? If it is literally water only, and no steam, i would be surprised if got out much dirt and grease. Even with Steam only, there are stans that you will struggle with.

What size is the bit of the machine which cleans the floor? If it is an upright/push along, then the bigger the base, the less work it will be for you as the more areas it does at once.
If it is a pull along with a pole and attachement on the end (Like a henry hoover style), i wold warn you that the end is sooo small it takes forever to do a whole room, and you will find it hard work! I got blisters!
Don't know anyone who is that pleased with them, steam cleaners will only help keep carpets clean, as the previous poster said- you really need something to force water and cleaner into the carpet and then to take back up the used dirty water.
They also drip water everywhere - if you want a good carpet cleaner go with an upright carpet washer, like Bissell, Vax etc.

They do hot water fill ones or cold water fill ones - and the prices are coming down from when I bought mine.

I have the Bissell one - although it was more than 60 and you have to use a detergent with it... But I can thoroughly recommend it.. It cleaned the carpets very well and sucked up the majority of the dirty water and so the carpets dried very quickly..
Maybe it is too late for your problem but I used a Bissell Carpet Steam Cleaner for years now. If you take care on with the special solution that you put in the carpet will be effectively clear after you pass with the steam cleaner over it. Good description of it you can find also here
