What was the series called that was very similar to Wild at Heart and even looked like it was filmed at the same place and I believe it was American. Filmed roughly at the same time as the UK series

I remember that, there was a cross-eyed lion called clarence and a chimp!

It was called Life Is Wild and it ran for one series of 13 episodes.There is an entry on Wikipedia.
