When are the inserts supposed to be used. Is it on all connections even if it is all plastic push fit

They are used on all but the smallest (10mm) pipe. The support the inner structure of the pipe.

They prevent the pipe distorting and some have additional seals so should always be used. I always use them on 10 mm but although they may not be needed on that size It's not worth risking a leak later on
