sirius: dog star children's book

Hi, when i was at school i used to read a fiction book all the time about a dog who was the spirit of Sirius the dog star. I'd like to buy the book but i'm not sure if this is the title and i don't know who wrote it! Can anybody help? I read it around early 90's but it may have been out before then.
