does anyone know why when ice forms on cars, it seems to form in swirls??

When it crystalises into ice it follows the minute blemishes in the laquer covering the paintwork. Over time, and through many carwashes, the laquer is covered in thousands of scratches so shallow you have to look in the right light to see them.
