Prank Nurse Death -Suicide? ...or Honour Killing...?
there is no proof yet that its suicide - thats just an assumption.
also apparently her husband phoned relatives and just told them that she was 'no more', but didnt say why or how she died ...
theres been talk of her culture meaning the shame was too much for her, but there has also been mention of it being an 'honour' killing ... for being duped so publicly and supposedly bringing shame on the family...
in a way it'd make more sense than her doing it... it must take a lot to want to kill yourself...and to actually do it - despair, depression, no way out etc - but its only been a few days ... doesnt seem long enough to reach that level really...and to leave your kids motherless... especially given how minor her part in the prank actually was ...

I`ve been out of the country since the news broke about the nurse (I saw it on CNN) but I think it`s insulting to suggest that her death was a result of an honour killing. Some of her family in India were interviewed and their name was DeSouza which indicates that they come from Goa (there are lots of DeSouzas in Goa) which is Catholic (due to it`s Portuguese past). Not all peoples on the Indian subcontinent are muslim and not all muslims partake in honour killings. I`m surprised that anyone even suggested such a thing.
These daft pranks have been going on for years, on the phone, in person, local and national radio presenters, Jeremy Beadle, Noel Edmonds fonejacker etc. Thankfully none of the past ones have ever had this reaction. The lady played a very minor part, and IF she did commit suicide it seems to be a huge over reaction. perhaps her death was natural and just a huge coincidence. hopefully we will find out the truth eventually.

no one knows how/why this lady died, the speculation and gossip being bandied around is dreadful. :( the main issue i have at the moment is, why was a registered nurse manning the switchboard, and why when a high profile patient is in this hospital, security was not tighter, i wonder if the hospital and royal security will alter their protocols in the future, ? following the incident i would be very interested to know if any senior staff spoke to either of these nurses involved ?

The news yesterday said that there should have been a protocol that anyone asking about Kate should have been referred to the security/police officer at the hospital, not put through to the ward - but that's by the way now, there may be a good reason why this wasn't done this time.

Apparently, the call came through in the night when the receptionist had gone home so the nurse answered the phone.
Nobody is to blame but I do think the hospital should have some sort of fielding security to deflect incoming intrusions from the press/pranksters etc. I`m surprised the staff were left to field phone calls etc on their own without any security measures being in place and without any support. Where I work, we have very high profile customers and there are all sorts of measures put into place to protect them from the public/press etc. They are kept completely out of the way of everybody and if we can do that, I`m surprised that hospital couldn`t do the same.

This thread is quite distasteful, the police have confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious but some seem keen to point the finger at her family and blame her "culture". This does seem uncalled for and appropriate.

Who was "at fault" for this poor nurse's death? Well, to a greater or lesser extent ...
1) The presenters who made the call
2) 2DayFM, the radio station who broadcast it - even more so than the presenters. The prank call didn't go out live, somebody senior sat and made a cold judgement to broadcast.
3) The other news media in this country and around the world who re-broadcast it. I doubt if it had stayed as a 2DayFM broadcast only that the nurse would have killed herself.
4) The society we live in, sections of which laps up such cruel pranks, which makes the media feel justified in broadcasting them.
5) The hospital - if (and only if) it didn't give any advice or training on coping with phone calls, or didn't do its utmost to support the nurse following the broadcast.
Also "fault" would be the wrong word, but the nurse herself and her family and friends obviously have a part in her death. The nurse herself, for not being strong enough to cope with the situation she found herself in, and her family and friends for not recognising that and supporting her sufficiently through it.

Personally , I dont consider that it was that of a big deal - the hoax call itself - and would not have in any way consider taking my life , over it ; nor would the 99 % of people , in my opinion .
However , we are all individuals and it would appear that the nurse was adversely affected by the incident , and felt that it was sufficiently that of an issue , to end her life .
