Time we all boycotted self service checkouts

They are just another way to employ less people, make shopping even more impersonal. I went to one supermarket the other day and there were hardly any staff at any of the normal checkouts, the one or two that were open there were long queues. Everyone was being gently ushered into the self service section, a bit difficult for me as I had a trolley full so I left it in the middle of the isle and walked out.

I would have done the same Dave, good on you.
I'd rather queue for 10 minutes to use a self-service checkout than use a staffed one straight away.
why, chris?
I like them, often so much quicker (maybe I have a scanning advantage as I used to work on a checkout :)). Especially in busy stores the queues move much faster as it gets all the people who only have a few items through quicker.
Not in ours it doesn't - too many people don't understand how to use them/where to put the money/where their bag is....

I prefer to choose who I have (or don't have) any form of social interaction with, even if it's just at a checkout. Further I value both profit and efficiency highly and it's clear that supermarkets can increase their efficiency (and their profits) by getting rid of checkout staff. I look forward to the day when they're all replaced by machines.
//Bazile - what are you on about? Halal? I'm mystified! //

LyndaB - Why are you mystified -you work for Asda , dont you ?

In the Asda store where i frequent , there is a dedictaed Halal meat section /counter , with dedicated staff ; which i would have thought is not unique to that store .
Yes I do, but you just said something about the Halal section without clarifying specifying that you meant in your local store. I would imagine that the colleagues work for Asda, but I don't know. We have had Halal meat in our store, but only for a limited time, and it was ages ago. It was pre packed, and available alongside the ordinary meat - no special treatment as far as I remember! Sorry for the misunderstanding xx
I hated them at first because something always went wrong but now I use them all the time unless it's a real trolleyfull. I really don't want to have to engage in slow boring conversation with the checkout staff - ooh those are nice etc etc
no need to apologise (-:

How has your day been so far ?
Hectic! Thank goodness I don't work in the checkout (self service or otherwise lol)
What's your job , in the store ?
great for laundering old money
Books and magazines - very heavy work and very busy at this time of year!
In my local ASDA the staff who have been taken off the tills to accomodate these self service have been moved onto stacking shelves so nobody has lost their jobs due to these tills, i cant see this being a unique situation in one store!
Hate them and I won't use them.
