attacked by a squirrel? no officer there was a gang of them; well according to Dom Joly, they seem to hang around in gangs; if not a gang, maybe a skirmish. Skirmish then shall be the collective noun, pass it on, or unless you got a better suggestion..? :-)

There seems to have been a recent upsurge of questions on AnswerBank to find collective names for creatures/people which/who do not, in fact, live their lives in coherent groups...ie that do not require a group-name!

Cattle indubitably spend their lives in herds, ants exist only in colonies, monkey-troops operate collectively...witches apparently often come together in covens, soldiers have their being in squads/troops and magistrates are known as 'the bench'. These and many others need collective names. However, although there may be numbers of squirrels inhabiting a given area, that doesn't make them 'a group' in the same sort of way. It's every squirrel for itself out there! We don't need a collective name for them.

What's a collection of squirrel questions called?
How about the same word as a pub's new supply of casks of Stella...a "drayful"?
