I received a letter from Virgin Media which said I could save over £55 by paying 12 months' line rental upfront.

According my bill, line rental is £13.90/month, so that's £166.80/year.

But the Virgin Media website says:
Line Rental Saver:
£120 for 12 months’ line rental must be paid in advance by debit/credit card.

So that's a saving of £46.80, not a saving of £55. Can anyone explain this?

Do your figures include VAT?
Seems odd but maybe the key word is COULD- it may be a standard letter that goes to lots of people and the actual savings vary depending on your circumstances.
The letter should really explain it
I would guess that they're about to jack up the line rental again - BT and talktalk already have - and the discount quoted is just a bit ahead of itself.
According to the small print notes on the reverse of my letter, it says that the Line Rental Saver of £55 is only for one year. After that standard monthly line rental charges will apply.
