Avatar morphing

I was reading a post from one of the very AB prolific posters and noticed that this person's avatar had morphed into a leprechaun with a fishing rod, just like Ed's. In a short time, it had returned to normal.
Can anyone explain how this happened?

Either they changed their avatar and then changed it back shortly afterwards.

Or somebody has slipped some hallucinogenics in your tea.

Mine quite often changes to other people's and other people's seem to change of their own free will too.

No wacky stuff at all, legal or otherwise.
I thought it was rather strange, as others have questioned the veracity of this person's posts.
I have never seen an avatar morph into Ed's, however. I thought it was sacrosanct.
