I have a pair of leather mules which rub my feet, how can i soften the leather? I have tried rubbing vaseline into the hard bits and soaking them in leather, any other suggestions?

Try really wetting the leather and then giving it a strech by cramming the shoe full of newspaper making sure you bulk out the area round the rubbing...Leave the paper in the shoe for at least 24 hours and then give it a try.
My brother was once a manager of a shoe shop and he used to take customers tight fitting shoes round the back to put onto his 'shoe widening machine'. The customer was always happy with the results. Oh , the machine was really the top of a brush/mop stick held upright between the operaters kness and the offending shoe part rubbed ,back and forward, vigourously over the top.
