vetuste_ennemi; that wordplay had not occured to me - I finally cracked this clue, the penultimate one I answered (SPAWN was the last), by another route.
I took the band leader in America to be Alexander, of Ragtime Band fame. Alexander is long for Sasha - so that was my answer. I hadn't seen the neat ordinary wordplay at all.

Good clue!
