Dutch Hoe - Why this name?

Why is a Dutch Hoe named as such? My Partner is Dutch, and moved to England a couple of years ago, when gardening shortly after he moved here, I asked him the very same question, not only did he not know, but stated that he had never even SEEN a Dutch hoe before, (not including the RedLight district variety!!!!) Does anyone have the answer?

Your partner is several centuries too your. The Dutch hose is so-called because it came from Holland. The English hoe was less sohisticated. The Dutch Hoe, designed for digging up weeds, was originally called a schoffel (or shovel) in Middle Dutch. It also was known as a scuffel hoe as the English tried to get their tongue around 'schoffel'. But in common usage it became easier to brand it a Dutch hoe because people couldn't remember 'schoffel'
