Woofgang, Glitter's preference is for prepubescent and pubescent girls.
possibly that his previous crimes were overseas, Lisa; they received publicity but on nothing like the scale Savile's have. His previous crimes in the UK were to do with porn, I think; they were widely reported but again not on the same scale, and it may be not everyone heard about them. Just a guess.
why is no one surprised
True jno, but if it was a case of not thinking they would be believed, to me it would have seemed a perfect time to go public.
Most strange.
only if they'd actually heard about his convictions, Lisa. Not everyone actually reads newspapers every day, and you didn't get nearly so much gossip flying around the internet in those days 15 or more years ago. No Google or anything. I'll be interested to hear their stories.
It was only in 1997 that GG was arrested in the UK for having indecent images on his PC, which were discovered when he took it PC World for repair, not the dark ages, jno.

It was a huge scandal at the time and there were many jokes about him both in the media and between friends. People did listen to the news on the radio and watch it on tv. I would be very surprised if there was anybody over 14 at the time that was unaware of it.

The scandal about him having sex with very young girls in Vietnam was around 2005/6 and there was plenty of media reports about that, too.
I too thought he was still in jail for the 2006 offences, but how time flies. It was 6 / 7 years ago I suppose.

I'm not in the slightest bit surprised by his arrest and have no doubt that there is far more to this than a few grioupies "throwing" themselves at him.
it was a scandal, not a huge scandal, hc. I think it takes a huge scandal to get people coming forward to reveal shameful secrets; you need to be really confident the world will at last take you seriously.

The internet was around in 1997 but also not in particularly wide use. I think I'd only just started on it myself (though obviously those with specialist interest like Glitter were quicker on the uptake). No Google (I can remember it starting up), no AB, if you wanted anything you had to faff round on Lycos and Yahoo. It wasn't a news medium as it is now.

/// However, don't damn the majority with such a tarred brush ///

And this is the part of your post that I was referring to.

Hence my reply stating that I hadn't made the remark you chose to accuse me of.

I made no suggestion whatsoever of the numbers involved, so I do not need to supply you with any "recognised statistical evidence to the contrary".
///gives a whole new meaning to "do you want to be in my gang"///

I am still trying to understand why, in this instance, the above comment was posted.
