I have a project in set design to produce a set twist on a classic fairytale, the examples in the brief are e.g. wind in the willows, set as a political tale with toad hall as the houses of parliament, alice in wonderland becomes alice in gothland. alladin in a steampunk fashion. My first idea was to do beauty and the beast set in egyptian times, where cleopatra was beauty and anubis the beast. However I was also thinking of anything I can twist on the little mermaid, maybe making it a lot darker than the original, anything that would make a good interesting set.
Just wondered if anyone had any more suggestions?

Thank you.

Rumplestiltskin, where she is a victim of domestic violence and is locked in the tower by an ogre of a hubby. Finally released by intervention of local councils domestic violence outreach team.

The original Little Mermaid is pretty dark: when she has legs, every step is like walking on knives and she *SPOILER* doesn't get the prince in the end, choosing to die rather than kill the prince in order to become a mermaid again.
