Are there any EP impersonators who dress in the style of the young, innovative and socially dangerous Elvis? Why do they all seem to prefer the tacky, middle of the road, Las Vegas style?

because it's more recognisable, more distinctive, more outlandish.

you wouldn't be a Bowie look-a-like and go dressed as 90s Bowie (i.e. pretty much ordinary guy) would you? you'd don make-up and orange wig and go as Ziggy.
