I think the only time you should hold it the day before is if your birthday is 29th February.

On the day definitely, but look at it as Birthday Eve (like Christmas Eve) Then do whatever you want on your birthday and treat yourself

My shifts decide when I get to celebrate mine. It disappoints in one way, but Mrs D ususally makes up for it by making the other day quite special. This year I'm going to Vienna a week after my birthday as I am late shift on my birthday week, but I'd settle for that every year.
