Update to IOS6, photos lost.

Daughter has just updated her iPhone 3GSwith the new iOS cloud 6, she thinks she has lost all her photos off the phone, does anyone please know how to retrieve them, need to update the iPad, but don't want to if photos etc are going to be lost. Thanks for any help.

Surely it wouldn't have been a problem anyhow, I can't imagine anyone would consider upgrading a devices OS without first ensuring they had a backup of everything important.
