hi, am i the only one who immediately thinks there must have been marriage trouble that is now over when people renew their vows?

my husband recently asked me if i wanted to renew ours. he asked because when we went to register our daughter's death, it was the same registrar that married us (despite a gap of 10 years and a different county!) then he said wouldn't it be nice to get the same registrar to renew our vows. I however am very suspicious of why people do this - i either think 1) an affair or 2) at least some big milestone like 20 or 40 years.

So, when you hear people are renewing, what do you immediately think?

having read that back, i realise it sounds like i'm suspicious of my husbands motives, but i didn't mean that!
I don`t really think of anything because I can`t see the point. If someone`s made the vow once, then it still stands so why do it again? (unless as you say, they have broken them, big time)
I really don't understand the whole business of renewing vows. I have never been able to get my head around it!
I renewed mine 4 years back - I had a horrible wedding nothing at all like I wanted so hubby said lets do it and have the day we wanted so we did.

I think it is a lovely idea and no I don't think at all that there is anything wrong with the marriage!
I'm with you - I can't quite see a reason for it other than the couple "making up" after problems or celebrating a milestone. But if the latter, why not just have a big party?!
2002 was the centenary of the church where my parents first got married and they were calling on couples to renew their vows en masse, so to speak. I took my camcorder and filmed the whole service.
After my Mum died in '07, the resulting video was a great reminder for my Dad to watch. It caused a few tears, but I'm very glad they did it as it was such a special occasion to film for future reference.

It would depend who it was and what I knew about them. I agree it could be to make up for misdemeanours, or because of some big milestone like 25 years, or because one of them has a terminal illness! :(

If it was a couple I didn't know at all, I wouldn't assume anything at all. It could be any of the above.
I can see why your husband asked and I think it was very thoughtful, romantic and lovely of him to ask
I didn't realise you had lost a daughter, I am so very sorry for your loss

But aside from that, I see what you mean
Not something I've ever wanted to do .I find it all a bit slushy to be honest .
I said for better or for worse nearly forty years ago .
Times have been better ,times have been worse ,times have been good and times have been bad but we're still trucking along :)
I can't actually remember much about my wedding. (No videos in those days... in fact I'm not sure the wheel had been invented.) But I don't think the answer is necessarily to hold another one.
