Litttle boxs's with numbers or letters in them

Nearly every website I have been on today have these little boxs's devided into four with either numbers in them or letters,

Anyone know what they are?

I see them quite a lot on Twitter when someone uses an emoticon that Firefox doesn't/can't load.

When I look on my iPad I can see it's a smiley/happy/whatever face.

Actually that one was from AB, an old post I just looked at about frontline spray, I have changed browsers to fire fox, And I think evian is right about fire fox cant load image,
