The Flit gun - smelled awful.
The Manchester Evening News, when it was a broadsheet (much more oomph when rolled up)
I have bought a device that resembles a tennis racquet. It is fitted with a battery which electrocutes the pesky insect when you swat it.
Very useful in the garden or when camping.
Flies only survive in houses when they have access to water, either prevent them fom coming in or give them no reason to stay. Here in rural SW France we have fly screens on the windows and doors that we leave open for ventilation, we probably get about 1 fly finding it's way in per day. Resident spiders are quite effective too.
