P and I are holding a Cheese and Wine Party in September to "celebrate"the end of harvest. I have pretty much everything either arranged or booked.

I am thinking now about the flower arrangements and cannot decide on what to have, either something in autumnal colours (red/gold), something bright such as a sunflower arrangement or indeed something with grasses/barley etc in?

Any suggestions?

What a lovely party to have. Ideally you'd have an arrangement which is in keeping with the harvets and therefore locally produced, and perfectly seasonal.

Michaelmas Daisies would be my choice or Carnations, Chrysanths or Dahlias. Have a look here for suggestions and see if you can source the flowers from a friendly neighbour or allotment to supply them on the day. If not do you have a local market? Go there on the morning and buy whatevers looking best on the day.

Chrysanthemums are usually in season in September - not the scabby looking ones you find in garages etc but the large headed varieties, they have some lovely bronze coloured varieties, you could also add in some spears of wheat and barley into an arrangement if you can find them
I'd go for the real country look with barley but reds and golds made up from hedgerow stuff - hawthorn and rowan berries, some travellers joy, honesty, sprigs of crab apple, ivy with berries, some Virginia Creeper type stuff - that turns beautiful red around September.
