My husband and myself worked in London and have London accents.
Our son and daughter went to Birmingham University and obtained employment in Birmingham so we decided to retire in Birmingham.
We have been in Birmingham for 18 months and pay our way using our pensions paid from London often using London bank cards and cheques.
On 3 occasions we have had people complain we should not retire in Birmingham as we have never contributed to Birmingham.
If this is right why were we allowed to buy a bungalow in Birmingham using some of the proceeds from our London home sale and why have people been willing to take our London pension money in payment for goods and services.

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. I'm from the north of Ireland with a broad accent and my wife was awfully posh sounding, not at all Brummie, and we lived near Birmingham after we moved from London with absolutely no remarks being made whatsoever. I've found Brummies to be some of the warmest people in the UK in fact.
I've just remebered that in the summer of 2009 when my shoe company was going through the collective consultation process and i represented the North of England stores, we met at a hotel in Birmingham, near the bullring, big place with very grand entrance, anyway, there was a little shoe shop on the slope as we came out of the bullring and I bought a pair of turquise flipflops with diamantes on the straps and they split after 2 wears and i couldn;t take them back as i never went back there again........so bad shopping experience in birmingham!
ah well, no wonder Brummies are all bitter and twisted if they can't get a decent pair of flipflops with diamantes, when everyone in Lunnun wears them all the time.
Ditch your Bank of London card, it's a dead giveaway! I always pay by cash when I'm in Brum.
I couldn't move to Brum, I can't understand a bloody word they say..........
"why were we allowed to buy a bungalow in Birmingham ...?"

You must have failed to declare on the relevant forms that you were from London. And you could be charged with money laundering if it is discovered London money is being spent in the Midlands. I just hope these 3 people don't report you to the authorities or you could find yourself being deported- although you could always claim you were an asylum seeker escaping certain death under the tyranical Boris Johnson regime.
Im from birmingham, I dont have an issue wherever you decide to retire.
... and pooof ... gone in a swirl of smoke ...
don't believe a word caz says, she is the founder member of the antilondonersmovingtobirmingham brigade
suspended eh, makes you wonder why they bother...
or the "get those cockneys aaat" group :)
I've never heard of anything so daft. Who were these people who complained?

I lived in Birmingham for 17 years - I came from the south of England and my OH was a Scotsman. Nobody ever commented that we were in the wrong place. Load of rubbish.
on re-reading the OP, perhaps mary should have used the more usual london term, 'my husband and I'
boxy.....
in birmingham you are likely to hear all manner of accents so my guess is the OP is telling porkies.
I live in Birmingham and I'm from the West Country - I've never had a problem with Brummies although some do tend to smile at my very different accent !
we get loads of londoners/southerners down here and - apart from the occasional welsh language issues - i have never heard of any problems!
My OH came down from Scotland to a job in Cradley Health - neither of them could understand each other...
