Can`t change gear from 1st upwards. Oil hasn`t been changed for ages and is black....could this be the reason?

Most likely carlton, it should be red in colour.

First thing to try is to drain and repenish the correct box oil to the right amount,

The Scorpio auto boxes are notoriously bad.
