You can now buy paint especially for cupboards. Dulux do a range called Realife Cupboard Paint. I don't know what colours they do it in but it would be worth looking into. Also Crown do a range for cupboards. They have some nice colours in their brochure.
I revamped my kitchen units a couple of years ago using Ronseal Paint & Grain. It really transformed them from dark wood to a limed oak colour. certainly worth considering.
I tried doing this for exactly the reasons you mention - it was so difficult! Make sure the doors are really clean and grease free or else the paint doesn't stick. Allow several days for doing the work - you'll need to clean and sand and clean and sand between coats and even if you get the one-coat stuff it takes at least 3 coats to get a decent finish. One of the doors I painted simply wouldn't 'take', the paint bubbled up regardless of what I tried and I got really p***ed off - cue lots of ranting. It all looked so c**p that I replaced the doors. Cost around 300 for 10 doors and 6 drawer fronts - take a friendly trade person with you - they get discount - for the cheapest option. Wished I'd done that at the outset.
