I have solid oak kitchen cabinets which are a bit outdated - can you please advise on a paint finish to cheer them up?

Forget the paint a cheaper alternative would be to tell them a few jokes.
Or tickle their knobs with a feather.
Seriously, though, I'd rather keep the natural wood. Could you replace or cover the inserts of cupboard doors with um, say sheets of rattan or marble look or some such and replace the knobs?
Most DIY superstores now stock paint designed for painting kitchen cabinet doors - ask in the paint section. However if you have solid oak it would be a shame to paint them over. How about stripping (rub down with paint remover and wirewool) and staining/revarnishing and changing the handles instead?
