Have been on 1 x 20mg tablet a day for several years, for acid reflux. A few months ago found that was now getting the burning pain even with the tablet so doctor upped dose to 2 x 20m a day. Changed doctors this wk for various reasons, saw him for 1st time last night and he just said I shouldnt be on 2 and normal dose was 1. Told him that I was in a lot of discomfort on just 1. He didnt offer any suggestions or help. Came home and read packaging and it does actually say should be just 1 and 2 is only to be done temporarily for a few weeks. But he wont now giv me enugh tabs to take 2 and I am going to be in pain with the burning - any help or ideas??

Smowball have you not tried Gaviscon for reducing the acid and stopping frequent acid reflux attacks?
Take half a teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda and see if that works.
Ask him if you would be better off on a different type of medicine.
Yes I agree with that aswell carlton 23,my mam swears by it.
Yes.........go back to the "new doctor" and tell him that 20mgms a day is not relieving the pain.

Never read instructions with the tablets.

40 mgs a day seems reasonable for relief of symptoms.

Have tried gavison, and all the similar remedies - no help at all for more than 2 - mins. Haven tried bicarb though. Packaging says 20mg a day, may be upped to 40 for 48 wks if gullet is damaged, then dropped to 10-20.

Think I may be changing doctors back! He was most un-interested - barely looked up from his desk!
Hio Smowball. I have taken two for a long time now and the doctor hasnt said I have to come off them yet.? ONe wasnt enough for me but I find two works. Brenda x

Yes one now makes no diffference - and if I forget to take the tablets at all for just a day, oh the burning is unbearable!
I know the feeling. Will have to ask my doctor when I see him next week. I will let you know if you do not get anywhere with yours. Brenda x

Thanks lb : )

Btw, for those who take the bicarb, is that on its own or in water??
Better in milk in my opinion.
Question Author
I do try the odd glass of milk actually when burning is really bad, will try the bicarb in that then
I have been on 2 x 20mg for about the last 5years and am fine but I do still get acid burning and wonder if your body adjusts to the medication .
Question Author
Think it might do.
I've been on 40mg at a time as well when things have been bad.
I've been on 40mg for a while. Tried dropping down to 20 at the doctor's suggestion but felt horrible again so I stick with 40.
I'm on 15mg Lansoprazole (similar to yours) and if I get an episode of acid reflux (chocolate brings it on!) I just up my dose to 2x15mg for a few days - I told my doc and he said it was fine.
try ranitidine ( shop name "Zantac") I have them prescribed for acid reflux, 300 strength, take one just before bed, works wonders for me.
