Just asking on behalf of someone else. She has been recieving lots and lots of nasy abusive text messages from her boyfriends (of 7 yrs) ex wife. She got hold of the number after her b/f gave his son his old phone with a new sim card but didn't delete numbers that were stored to the phone. She can't change her number as its a work phone too. This has been going on intermittantly over a period of about 3 years, now she's fed up and wants to know if the police will do anything or if she can get a solicitor to send a letter. She has asked her to stop and has not retaliated in any way.

Has she kept the texts? If she has, the police should be her first port of call.
I'm not sure the police will put it at the top of their priority list if it has been going on for three years, unless the frequency and abusiveness has increased significantly.

A solicitor will prepare a 'stop and desist' letter for a fee.

Thank-you, I will mention the letter from the solicitor. Yes, the texts have got more abusive thats why she can't ignore them anymore

Also can you tell me what weight the letter would carry if she didn't stop
C.all the police on your local number. They do tend to take it seriously.
My brothers ex kept sending abusive texts to him, he took the phone into the police station and reported it. The police rang her and told her to pack it in or they'll arrest her, it stopped.
I've had the police round here 3 times because my friends loony GF reported me for harassment. All I did was answer her text.

I think they put 'nutter alert' on her number.
The letter carries no weight in law (I don't think) but does outline the consequences of the behaviour should it continue.

If as you say the communication has recently increased in volume and abusiveness then contact the local police.
tell the police or ask your boss can you change the phone and tell them why/show them the messages, it is harrasment and you dont have to put up with it.
