One fine day in the middle of the night
2 dead men got up to fight
back to back they faced each other
drew their swords and shot each other

My mother taught this rhyme to me sixty something years ago
I often wondered if there is a name for this type of rhyme?
and does anyone know of any others like it?

It rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot I froze to death
Susannah don't you cry.

The full version of the poem (with an additional 3 verses) is here, together with some similar verses:

PS:
At least your mother taught you clean poetry. My mum (normally prudish) taught me this:
It must be done; it must be done,
Out of the window he cocked his bum.
Copper came by,
Looked up high.
Wallop!
Dollop!
Right in the eye!
;-)
You're welcome, magicmack.
It's the simple things. :)

If you're looking to entertain your grandkids with daft poems, Mick, my thoughts turned to the work of Spike Miligan. That took me to this page, which includes links to most of his best work but also (down the left hand side) has loads of links to other poems for children:

This is my favourite, Chris: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/bongaloo/
Here's one I wrote for a young friend, Logan, when he was 5:

"Liggedy Loggedy"

Liggedy loggedy Logan
Went to the liggedy loggedy loo

Liggedy loggedy Logan
Did a liggedy loggedy poo

Liggedy loggedy Mummy
Gave a liggedy loggedy yell
'Cos liggedy loggedy Logan
Left a liggedy loggedy smell

Liggedy loggedy Daddy
Took a liggedy loggedy sniff
Then liggedy loggedy fainted
'Cos of the liggedy loggedy whiff!

Brilliant Buenchico I don't think I am going to sleep tonight, going to the toilet will never be the same
Excellent Chris.
Reminds me of a song that we had on old record. Dont remeber all of it but something like this.
Busy doing nothing working the whole day through
trying to find lots of things not to do
This is my mum's;

Spring is sprung, the grass is ris.
I wonders where the birdies is.
They say the birds is on the wing.
Ain't that absurd?
I always thought the wing was on the bird.
