Hi, a random question here but something I've always wondered is if you ask for cashback in a shop does it have to be multiples of £10 or can you get any amount, say £5 or £22 or whatever?

i expect you can take whatever you want up to the cash limit on your card...
in my experience you can have whatever amount you want up to the shops limit.
i regularly ' square things up' in tesco with no problem..

say the bill is £35.26 and you want to pay £60.00 on your card then just ask for £24.74 cashback..simples

Reminds me of the story about the chap in the supermarket who bought a tube of Polo mints and offered the cashier a £20 note.
"Haven't you got anything smaller? You'll take all my change!"
"No sorry, that's all I've got."
"Have you got a debit card or something?"
"Yes, of course. There you are."
"Thank you! Any cashback?"
"Yes please, £19-65"

Haha I won't be trying that but now I know the answer I might save a few pounds, thanks :-)
I work in a Post Office and we offer a banking service to most banks customers, NatWest, RBS, Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Halifax, to name a few, the only major bank we don't deal with is HSBC. If your bank is one of those we do deal with you can withdraw cash free of charge (some shops will charge 50p or £1 to get cashback) and you can withdraw any amount from 1p up to whatever your cash card limit is (usually £250 or £300 a day). So if you want to withdraw £2.21 you can do.

Thanks, that's really handy to know, it saves constantly taking out more than you need which you inevitably spend
It is a while ago now, but when I asked for £25 cashback in Morrisons I was told it had to be in multiples of £10 -rosy
Question Author
Well it just so happens I got £5 cashback in Morrisons today so they must have changed that rule, either that or the assistant got it wrong
