I wouldn't have thought this normally happened; how would a UK judge assess the severity, or the trustworthiness, of a conviction in Rwanda, or Japan, or even the USA?

A series of convictions for similar offences, rather than a one-off, might be taken into account, I suppose, but you'd still have to have some reliable means of verifying them.
