The actual book is Dead Heat - a dead cert would be a shoo-in but is the expression restricted to racing? I went for the title but am now thinking I am wrong!

a "dead cert" is a shoo-in---a sure thing---and there seems to be a Dick Francis book with DEAD CERT as its title
