Spirituous Jayne, spirituous. :)

"Release the pungent, earthy aroma of the blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley and the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's streams. Like the islanders it may seem a little aloof at first, but make the effort"
Can't chuck it. I have a collection for when people come round.

I've just sniffed one of my Laphroaigs. I think it smell iodiney.

(or whatever the adjective is for something that smells like iodine)
Christ, I don't DRINK the stuff, Douglas!

Oh yeah ... "peaty" ... that was the other word.
Iodine is frequently used when describing the Islay malts.
We think someone's got whisky in their iodine bottle.
It's vaguely reminiscent of the smell of the surgery back in the day when the doc had all those interesting coloured, ribbed bottles about the place, but not iodine.
yay me!

So ... err ... this is an Islay malt, is it?
And yes, I am THAT old. :)
Yep!
Laphroaig is from Islay, yes. Peaty certainly. Maybe that's what you're thinking smells like iodine...
Iirc the Islay malts blurb talks about hints of iodine from seaweed used to heat the stills
Okay, MR ... I'll settle on "peaty"

The ones of mine that I like the smell of (after a quick sniff test) are called Bruichladdich and Aberlour.

Also Macallan and Balvenie, quite nice but not so distinctive.

Oh, phwoooarr!! ... I've just sniffed one called Lagavulin. That really ponks. It's like the Laphroaig. Peaty ... not iodine, obviously.
