Who sang the version of this song used in the late 1980s/early 90s cinema ad for (I think it was) Bacardi?

It sounded a lot like the original Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers original, but the lead singer was a female and no, it wasn't Diana Ross' version.

No - definitely a female lead singer, so not the Beach Boys, but thanks for trying. :-)
This is from wiki:-

"Why Do Fools Fall in Love" has also been covered by Gale Storm, Marion Ryan, Alma Cogan and Joni Mitchell.

I hope that this helps.
Diana Ross had a hit with it in the early 80s
oops sorry- just spotted that you said it wasn't her

Thanks wolf63.

Just found a Gale Storm clip on Youtube - it wasn't her!

Checking the others now.... :-)

I've found a clip of Joni Mitchell's version and it's definitely not her, but I can't find any clips of either Alma Cogan or Marion Ryan, but from their Wiki profiles I doubt if it was either of them.

Additionally I'm now thinking perhaps the ad was for Southern Comfort and not Bacardi....possibly?
Hi- I FINALLY found it on youtube! It's Southern Comfort cinema advert-'Why Do Fools Fall in Love'.
So glad someone posted it! Media URL: http://youtu.be/nEhnUTyPCrc
