signal
eerie - is what I used
remit - m = member in tier backwards
5a - signal. Lang(old Archbishop) + is
reversed.

thank you mojay - I've no idea why signal is the answer to 5a
hadn't realised you wanted signal explained too - but it's been done now - sorted !
Question Author
sorry mojay - some of the crossword clues are a bit like the offside rule to me!
I put eyrie for 15d. I hate them clues when it could be either or. I wonder
what the ruling is.
Question Author
I always seem to guess the wrong way with those sort of clues. It annoys me if I waste a stamp sending it in.

Are you still going to do crosswords when the stamps go up on Monday?
I only send in the mail on sunday prizeword. The weekday ones i just do for
relaxation. I only ever use 2nd class, because I dont believe it gets ther any faster if you put on 1st class. It's a rip -off!
those two way spelling were always something i tripped over as well, and still do sometimes. nowadays, I look at he bit that appears to means 'sounds like' and the part of the clue it is attached to is usually the wrong spelling.
So in this clue, some say is the 'sounds like' and is by 'eagles nest' which would be eyrie, so the other spelling should be the one that is being looked for. Does that make sense?

I agree with you cupid4.
and I've stopped bothering to send in the Sunday one too - but it'll not stop me enjoying xwords :)
