Football - lack of camera technology during game

Why oh why do they still not have the technology still to confirm whether a ball has gone over the line into the net, whether its a hand ball etc, when they have it in so many other sports, especially tennis. They still rely on the ref and linesmen, who often get it wrong and even when they admit this afterwards the final result isnt altered. In this day and age it makes no sense, especially in the important matches. Whats the excuse??

Because the game would always be stopping like American sports. Do you Really want that ??

The problem is that the game does not lend itself well to stopping to look at things. There is a case for Video review when play has stopped eg goal is scored and there is some doubt about offside for example so as the ball is dead they could review it. However when the ball may have crossed the goal line you cannot stop play and review so they could play a long time before the ball is dead and possible even score at the other end. Now if it turns out that the ball did cross the line should we then allow the goal and disallow all subsequent play including the goal at the other end? As you can see it quickly becomes farcical.

Good points, but with todays technology surely you could tell within seconds , just as when you watch a match at home and clearly see straight away if a decision is incorrect.

Tennis is a great example of technology helping improve the game and reducing contentious calls. The guys from 'Hawkeye' claim their system used in football could tell if the ball has crossed the line allowing them to tell the ref within 1 second so no need to stop the game unless it's a goal.

There is an argument that the technology shouldn't be used because every ground would need to have it installed including the lower division or non league clubs. I don't agree and use tennis as the reason. Hawkeye is only used on a small number of courts at the bigger tournaments.

Oh, and FIFA are testing technology at the moment. Reckon there will be a pilot soon, probably after Euro 2012 is done.
