Planted an apple tree earlier this year and it is just not doing anything, no leaf buds, nothing, but it is not dead, any clues please.

Well if you're sure it's not dead Traci it'll come to life when it's ready. Maybe it's a late fruiting one and they may come into bud later than others. Whereabouts in the country are you?
Question Author
I am in York, it is definitely not dead, when I scrape at the bark with my fingernail the inside is a nice fresh green colour.
Question Author
Just looked it is a Coxs orange pippin.
Are other apple trees nearby in blossom? They are down here but I'm on the south coast.

OH said one around the corner from us is, do you think that it might not do anything this year, planted it about 8-10 weeks ago.
It should definitely get leaves on it if it's not dead even though if it's a young tree it might not blossom this year or next. Here is an interesting link about COP's, they can be trouble!

Thanks for the link ladybirder, I will keep an eye on it.
was it bare root? bare root plants are sometimes chill treated to keep them from shooting till they are planted.
Question Author
What do you mean by bare root please, fairly new to gardening.
Bare root means it wasn't in a pot of soil there were just the roots usually in a plastic bag. Some trees take time and the roots need to start getting nourishment from the soil before the tree comes into bud. I've noticed a fruit tree in my garden isn't showing anything yet but it's not dead. It's still cool for the time of year.
I live a good 50 miles north of York, I planted some bare rooted apple trees about a month ago and they are just starting to bud. Are there buds on the trees that look ready to go? It could just be a slow starter especially with the cool weather
