Why do cats go crazy all of a sudden in the early to late evening? Instead of hanging around like usual they zoom back and forth, up and down, around, etc. like they're possessed! My only idea is maybe that's the time of day wild cats wake up and go hunting, like their metabolism makes them want to be very active.

Sorry I dont really have an answer for you, but I just wanted to say my mum and I used to call this "The mad half hour" You could nearly set your watch by our old cat, very funny (and cute) I like your theory though!
Yes,we call it the mad half-hour too, mycatis! Although, with our cats,it can happen at any time of the day or night!....and when it does happen...no surface or other inhabitant of the house is safe!!!
My cat does this too, usually just after I've gone to bed, when he proceeds to charge about the house leaping on and off the bed, running round in circles on the bed and on me then out the door, up the stairs and back again! Not sure if this is a theory but I've started to notice that usually within about a half an hour of doing this he goes to use his litter tray! Maybe its somehow related.

We call it "The Witching Hour!" :)
