because I get such bad acid reflux that I can't lie down and IF I manage to sleep at al (sitting up only if you please) I throw up acid and blood in my sleep.

Which bit of you produces acid? and what would happen if you took it out? Is it worth a try lol?

You would be unable to digest food without some acid.
I presume you take medication for reflux? Have they explored surgical options with you?
Google Fundoplication. Its a surgical procedure for reflux.
About 1 in 10 people suffer with Hiatus Hernia. This could cause the condition you complain of, so it would be worth getting checked out by your doctor.

A Hiatus Hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes up into your chest by squeezing through an opening in the diaphragm, the large, thin sheet of muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen.

I know two people that have this condition and they get bad acid reflux so that they need to be propped up in bed at night. I'm sure a doctor could prescribe medication to help you, whether you have a Hiatus Hernia or not.

But you need to get checked out - don't just suffer it. Lack of sleep will really start to get you down.

Hi,

I don't have a Hiatus Hernia. I almost wish I did I would then be able to do something.

I have Zoton fast tabs but it doesn't seem to do any good at night. Which is when the reflux is worst.

I have had a camara down my throat as well an d they didn't find anything wrong.
Hi Cassa, I was prescribed Zoton for years with little effect. Switched to Omeprazole 20mg with great results (subject to playing the game with diet).
It's worth a go for a good night of sleep.
Hope it works out. :)
I agree with douglas9401.........Omeprazole should do the trick.

\\\Which bit of you produces acid? and what would happen if you took it out? Is it worth a try lol?\\\

Cells in the stomach lining produce the acid and as for taking "it" out.............just give that a miss.

Fundoplication is an option.............but a procedure of last resort.
I had a similar problem some time ago. The first thing that I did was to try to find out what I was eating/drinking that may cause the problem. I also tried eating my dinner earlier in the evening so that there was a longer period before going to bed. I was also taking Brufen (with my meals) three times a day.
First I changed the Brufen for Volataren and Ompranyt.
I also changed from a dry White wine to a medium dry, and we now eat at seven rather than eight. All of these things together with identifying what it is that you are eating to cause the reflux ( you can usually taste it ) seem to have done the trick. A bit long winded but it may help.
Best of luck.
PS, if all else fails, try a Doctor!
I have acid reflux at night and find that a table spoon (10 ml.) of Tesco's Heartburn and Indigestion Liquid 15 minutes before bed time soon sorts it out. It's also cheaper than the well-advertised Gaviscon.
Also, don't have large suppers.
I also have a problem at night with heartburn/reflux but usually only when I dont take my Omeprazole,
cassa I've never been to my G.P so don't know why I get this so bad when I lie or bend down, but I find that if before bed I chew any over the counter acid type pills it helps me get to sleep. I also put some on the shelve next to my bed for when it wakes me and have another chew which helps ease it. Shops own brands are much cheaper as I go through loads.

Thanks everyone.

I might try to get a different tablet next time. I have tried all the over the counter stuff and not one of them has touched the sides.

Although chocolate before bed makes it quicker, it doesn't matter what I eat or when.. it comes up regardless :(

Trowing upnblood and acid is not my idea of a good night lol but I am getting rather used to it now and I haven't even slept in my bed for a week.

I shall have a look at all the suggestions you have made and see if any work.

Thank you.
I had severe acid reflux for ages but since taking Lanzoprazole daily haven't hardly had it at all for the past three years. Does anyone know the difference between Lanzoprazole and Omeprazole - or are the doing the same job?
Ann.....basically the same.......they work the same way.

Proton pump inhibitors if you would like some midnight reading ;-)
Looking here..

http://www.patient.co...dicine/Omeprazole.htm
Extract from:

This is called 'acid reflux' and can cause heartburn and/or oesophagitis.

And..

http://www.patient.co...cine/Lansoprazole.htm

This is called 'acid reflux' and can cause heartburn and/or oesophagitis

So to me, as a non medical person, they seem to be achieving similar aims.

I forgot to say that I don't even need to lay down to trow up :(
sI am like to girls from the Excrsist and can throw up blood and acid so suddenly that there is no way of stopping it hitting the end of the bed...

I think it is a matter of finding the PPI that best suits and at the moment I haven't found it :( :( :(
If it was me, I would be more worried about throwing up Blood than about the acid reflux. One of my uncles died with a burst ulcer years ago!!!!!!!
I think you should visit your doctor
