Does anyone know how I can clean rust from tins that I found tucked away in my loft. The tins are quite old and it'd be nice to clean them up without damaging the paint.

If you can see rust, the paint is already damaged. You can buy a product from car accesory / diy shops which when painted over the rust it returns it back to metal. It does end up black though once it's done it's job.

Can't remember what it's called.

You could try soaking them in cola... however I'm not sure if it will also strip the paint from the tins?

I just had another idea how to protect the paint on the tins... try coating them in either vaseline or masking fluid. You can buy masking fluid from art shops and when it dries it forms a rubbery waterproof surface which peels off afterwards.
